portrait gallery lifestyle gallery about contact	About my photography I was born in Scotland and lived and travelled all over the world during an international business career. It is only recently that I acquired a passion for photographing my fellow human beings. I am fascinated by the way in which a person can, from one moment to the next, display such contrasting emotions: tranquillity can follow elation, pride showing a hint of humility, confidence may reveal a hint of reserve. The challenge is to capture that special look that reaches into the soul within. I seek originality in composition, or an element of mystery, that adds depth to personality and which takes the study one step above the conventional. My portraiture is done either in the studio or on location. Since the majority of my subjects express a preference for black & white, it comprises most of my work. Black & white photographs are printed in my own darkroom in Suffolk, and for colour I use commercial labs. I am invariably asked whether I have adopted digital photography. The answer is ‘yes’, but I still have a preference for conventional film for serious work. Some special techniques such as lith printing can only be achieved in the darkroom. The biggest challenge is capturing that fleeting moment which delights in its truthfulness. For that, technology is a poor substitute for imagination, spontaneity, a little courage - and the eye.
